#1 – Folic Acid
According to one study, there is a link between folic acid deficiency and premature hearing loss.
Folic acid reduces the levels of homocysteine in the body. Homocysteine is a type of amino acid that, at high levels, worsens the effects of oxidative stress. This is a state in which there is an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants, resulting in cell damage.
Because there isn’t enough folic acid to reduce the levels of homocysteine, a condition called hyperhomocysteinemia occurs. This affects the way homocysteine is metabolized in the cochlea, and it also impairs blood flow into the cochlea. If left untreated, it could lead to premature hearing loss and presbycusis (a type of sensorineural hearing loss caused by aging).
One study found that folic acid supplementation benefits older adults who are suffering from hearing loss. By increasing folic acid in the body, the decline in hearing is reduced.
To boost your folic acid levels, you need to eat more folic acid-rich veggies like spinach and asparagus.
#2 – Zinc
Zinc helps boost your immune system’s health. It also plays an important role in cell growth and helps speed up the healing process. One study showed that zinc deficiency contributes to presbycusis and tinnitus.
If you’re suffering from frequent ear infections and tinnitus, increasing your intake of foods rich in zinc can help protect your ears. Foods rich in zinc include beans, oysters, and cashews should be added to your diet. You should also include nuts, raisins, oats, and dried cranberries in your diet.
